Ashwagandha, a herbal extract that typically contains withanolids and flavonoids. Ashwagandha is commonly used for energy, stress management and as an antioxidant.

Withanolides are extracted from fresh roots of a plant named Ashwagandha of the family Solonaceae. The plant grows as a stout shrub that reaches a height of 170cm. It bears yellow flowers and red fruit. Ashwagandha grows abundantly in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. It is used in medicine because it suppresses free radical generation and cancer cell proliferation. In some experiments withanolides are found to induce significant regeneration of axons, dendrites, pre-synapses and post-synapses in the brains of mice, however, research is in progress on its brain regenerative properties. Withanolides also ameliorate neuronal dysfunction in mice with Alzheimer's disease.
